Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a serious mental illness that negatively affects how a person feels, thinks and acts. Globally, an estimated 5% of adults suffer from depression, approximately 280 million people in the world have depression.1
MDD is typically confirmed through a diagnostic interview.
To be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a person needs to experience 5 out of the following 9 symptoms most of the day, almost every day, for at least two weeks in a row. One of these symptoms must be one of the main symptoms:
- Depressed mood
- Losing interest/ or pleasure in activities [anhedonia]
- Significant weight changes or change in appetite
- Having trouble sleeping (insomnia) or sleeping too much (hypersomnia)
- Feeling restless or slowed down in your movements or thoughts
- Feeling tired or lacking energy
- Feeling worthless or having too much guilt about things
- Finding it hard to think, concentrate, or make decisions
- Having thoughts about death, including thinking about suicide, planning it, or trying to do it
